INVITATION
The 2014 report of the UN Commission of Inquiry on human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea concluded that the systemic, widespread and gross human rights violations in North Korea amount to crimes against humanity, and has called for international cooperation with a view to ensuring full accountability. Accordingly, the matters of “accountability” and “impunity” have emerged as integral parts when discussing the situation in the country and approaches to be taken. This new momentum creates an impetus to discuss transitional justice frameworks as a holistic response to the ongoing human rights atrocities in North Korea.
Within Asia, many societies have already experienced transitional justice processes. In countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, transitional justice has been an ongoing process. In Myanmar, a vibrant transitional justice dialog is emerging.
This conference will provide a forum for a better understanding, policy discussion and debate on transitional justice in the context of Asia and the Korean peninsula. The conference will contribute to the ongoing discussion in the region and also provide insights and partnership opportunities for stakeholders, including victims, policymakers, civil society organizations, and academia. Please join us for an engaging discussion.
